Home About YMCA

HISTORY
The Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) was founded in London in 1844 by George Williams. Williams wanted to provide a wholesome, Christian alternative to life on the streets to young men away from home for the first time. They offered Bible study and prayer.  In 1851, the first YMCA in the United States was founded in Boston by sea captain and missionary, Thomas Valentine Sullivan. The YMCA movement quickly spread across the United States. The YMCA of Greater Charlotte was founded in November of 1874 to help young men grow in spirit, mind and body.

Today, our YMCA, together with YMCAs across the nation, is the largest community service organization.

OUR VALUES
All YMCA programs teach the core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility and continue our 159-year tradition of emphasis upon youth, health and wellness, adult education, and community collaboration and problem solving.  The YMCA has always grown from within its community and is a reflection of the community itself in diversity and values.  The YMCA is an open and inclusive organization and welcomes all without discrimination to race, ethnicity, color, national origin, citizenship, creed, religion, age, abilities, sexual orientation or income.
